How to prepare yourself for learning a foreign language?
A foreign language is maybe necessary or, at least, very useful. If you are a native English speaker, you are a lucky person. About 30% of the world population speaks English, it’s the second most spoken language after Mandarin and before Spanish.
If not, you almost surely have to learn a second or even a third language in order to have good prospects at your job or most everywhere else. Now, which language you are going to learn is entirely your choice, given the circumstances you are living in. But how to prepare for it, is quite similar independent of the language you are going to learn.
First of all, you should have a pretty good idea about why you want to learn that language. You need to find out what your motivation is. Learning a foreign language requires sustained effort and this can not be delivered, if you don’t have a good reason for it.
Second, you should learn something about the country in which that language is mostly spoken, in order to get familiar with its roots. You could also pay a visit to that country in order to get to know the people and to hear that language in its own environment.
Third: prepare for a long trip, it isn’t something that can be done quickly. You should expect to need at least one year (if you are very talented in learning foreign languages) or two or maybe more years if foreign languages are not exactly your “thing”.
Fourth: find a good language course, with the right program for you, in the proximity. Your comfort is very important when it comes to a long term commitment.
Fifth: try to meet your teacher. The relationship with your teacher should be based on trust and mutual understanding (kind of like the relationship with a therapist).
Keeping all that in mind, I wish you all the best learning a foreign language!
